A reliable way to begin

Begin with bonds to 10 and use objects or fingers when needed.

Connect related facts, such as 3 + 7 = 10 and 30 + 70 = 100.

  • Read the board before acting.
  • Make one deliberate move at a time.
  • Review what changed after each move.

Build consistency

Say the known part, the missing part and the whole aloud.

Use subtraction from the target when the missing part is unclear.

Common beginner errors

Most early losses come from speed rather than difficulty.

  • Counting from one every time instead of recalling a known pair.
