A 10–15 minutes practice routine

You do not need to recreate a classroom lesson. A short routine that mixes explanation, one modelled example and independent recall is enough for useful home practice.

    Start with the learning goal: “I can say the most important points in fewer words.” Ask your child to explain any words they already know.

    Model one example together: Read: 'Bees collect nectar from flowers. They carry it back to the hive, where it is made into honey.' What is the main idea?

    Let your child try two questions independently: Write one important detail from the passage. / Which detail is least important in a summary: 'bees collect nectar' or 'flowers can be many colours'?

    Ask “How do you know?” or “Which clue/fact helped?” so the child explains the method rather than only giving an answer.

    Finish with a quick retrieval check: Explain summarising a text in one sentence.

Support without giving the answer

Helpful prompts

  • Ask the learner to show working or quote evidence only where the task requires it.
  • Use the answer guide to identify the exact misconception rather than asking for unnecessary extra writing.
  • For extended English tasks, quality and accuracy matter more than length.
  • Ask “What do you notice?” before explaining the method.
  • If your child is stuck, reduce the numbers/text complexity before returning to the original question.
